What happens after someone dies in Australia — the practical steps

When someone passes away, a death must be registered with the relevant state or territory registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages — typically arranged by the funeral director. Once registered, certified copies of the death certificate can be obtained, needed for notifying banks, super funds, and government agencies.

If the deceased had a Will, the executor administers the estate. Without one, the court appoints an administrator. Both may require probate through the Supreme Court. Our Beyond the Service guide covers the full checklist.

About Remember Well•

A guide for Australians navigating loss — and those who want to be ready.

Remember Well• helps Australian families navigate every part of the process after someone passes away — from the first hours through to the final farewell and beyond. Our guided planner captures every decision and builds a summary document you can share directly with your funeral director, so you never have to repeat yourself in one of the hardest conversations you'll have.

We also offer a Plan Ahead tool for those who want to record their own wishes, store important documents, and leave a clear guide for the people they love — so their family never has to make every decision alone.
